Q & A WITH Kalavida surf shop

how long have you been selling Red Paddle Co boards?

We’ve had Red Paddle Co in the store for 6 years, as a specialist SUP store we understand the need to provide customers with the very best quality which is why stocking Red Paddle Co was a simple choice

could you tell us a little more about where you are located?

Located in the heart of the Okanagan valley, watersports are second nature to us. With the shop design based on the quaint and quirky shops you’ll find around the Hawaiian Islands, our location on Kalamalka Lake is widely regarded as one of Canada’s most iconic paddling destinations.

do you offer lessons or the option to try boards?

We have a full demo and rental centre with over 30 boards to try. Our location gives every style of paddler the opportunity to put the board through its paces. For those customers who are yet to take to a board, the lake provides the perfect spot to give paddling a go.

“Our philosophy has always been about promoting the benefits of the sport and the many different ways you can enjoy it. ”

Is there a store philosophy or something you believe in as a store?

The philosophy has always been about promoting the benefits of the sport and the many different ways you can enjoy it, We strongly believe that we live in a beautiful, relatively untouched area of the world and consequently are very active in the preservation of our waterways, donating significant funds to the “Keep Kal Blue Society”.

any community activity that the store is involved with?

Our SUP programmes are particularly popular with adults and kids alike, both beginner and intermediate abilities are catered for in dedicated groups. For ladies, we have our Wahine Wednesday’s which are women specific paddle sessions, again very popular. To have so many varying groups out on the water is a great thing to see and we love to be a part of that.

do you have any favourite sup spots in the area?

As mentioned, our lake is a great spot for those getting into the sport or wanting to cruise. We also have some mellow river runs within a 30 minute drive, such as the Shuswap and the Eagle Rivers.

could you tell us a little more about the name of the store?

Naturally, you would think that Kala is linked to the lake which provides our local area most of their drinking water. However, the word “Kala” holds roots in Hawaiian language meaning “There are no limits- no real boundaries between your body, you and other people and you and the world. Separation is an illusion”. “Vida” simply means “Life”.
