With over 35 years experience in the paddle sports world, AS Watersport manager, Dan Bewsey explains that it was an easy decision to introduce Red Paddle Co to the store in 2012. As well as stocking our award-winning all round range and Voyager boards, AS Watersports, stock all the paddling accessories you need for a safe, comfortable and stylish paddling experience. Following a busy summer we caught up with Dan to find out what makes AS Watersports so special…

Q & A WITH ONE OF THE BEST RED PADDLE CO DEMO CENTRES IN THE UK

COULD YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE LOCATION OF THE STORE?

Dan: We have an idyllic location right on the doorstep of Exeter Canal. We pride ourselves on offering free demos on any of our boards as well as offering hire and tuition in a relaxed environment with qualified in-house instructors. In the summer months we have a full Red Paddle Co fleet ready to go on the water at any time. We strongly believe getting people on the water to feel the differences between the boards far outweighs any information customers may find online. With 6 miles of calm water through natural surroundings, it’s a fantastic location to get to grips with the sport.

could you tell me a little more about your store philosophy?

Dan: We firmly believe in a personalised experience for each and every customer. There is a board for everyone but its getting it right for the person that matters. We don’t believe in hard selling, instead we want the customer to enjoy their board for years to come.

As paddlers ourselves, we want to know the equipment we use will keep us safe but also provide the best performance on the water. This is why we only stock brands that we personally use, if we wouldn’t buy, use and trust it- it doesn’t get in!

We hear AS Watersports have a big influence in the local paddling community, what kind of events can people get involved with at the store?

Dan: Again, our location provides so much opportunity for some great events. We have numerous community paddles throughout the summer months. It doesn’t end there, we believe hearing inspiring stories throughout the winter helps get you pumped for a summer of adventure which is why we hold our “Winter Warmers” – free evening talks from inspirational paddlers and explorers.

“We strongly believe in getting people on the water to feel the differences of the boards, far outweighs any information customers may find online. ”

Where do these paddle events usually take place? Any Secret Spots for newcomers to the sport?

Dan: Our go to trip to get the maximum time enjoying those sunny summer evenings, start literally at our doorstep on the Exeter Canal. We have one pub just 40 minutes paddle away and another a 3 hour paddle, there’s a tour for everyone.

For fear of giving away any secrets, we’ll just say there are some areas on the canal you can cross over to the beautiful River Exe and explore some incredible hidden spots! Of course, being in Devon we’re never far from the coast and love taking our Red Paddle Co boards, knowing they’ll perform so well.

Anything else we should know about AS Watersports and its team?

Dan: We are a small, enthusiastic and approachable team and love to show people what Red Paddle Co boards are capable of. So much so one of our team members, Liam, has recently completed a 10 day paddle of the Lower Kali Gandiki in Nepal as well as having a trip on the Thames in his sights on the 9’6 Compact. We always jump at the chance to get out on our Red Paddle Co boards.
